Selling Part of the Baby Bells
In.its 11-year history, Bell Communications Research, a.k.a. Bellcore, has
developed everything from environmentally friendly rechargeable batteries
to speech-synthesizer software, as well as industry-wide communication
standards. Now the research arm of the seven baby Bells may have to develop
a new name: as of last week, its owners have put it up for sale. Their
reasons? Diverging strategies, potential rivalries and constraints on
Bellcore's product development due to government restrictions on its owners.
The giant nonprofit won't go cheaply: it boasts 6,000 employees and annual
revenues of $1 billion.
