Connie Chung may have gotten the most smileage out of Newt Gingrich's mom,
but Bill Schechner, the KPIX radio (and TV) news anchor, was the first
interviewer around here to put her on the air. Back on Dec. 28, Bill
discovered that Kathleen Gingrich's home phone number in Dauphin, PA, was
listed, so what the heck, he gave her a call. And she answered, no doubt
lighting another cigarette as she did so (she's a chain-smoker). When Bill
expressed surprise at the availability of her number, she said, `How else
you people going to find me?' As they chatted, she continued stirring up
a batch of macaroni and cheese, probably Velveeta, with a light dusting
of tobacco ash. `Making lunch for the grandkids,' she explained.
Schechner didn't come away scoopless: When he asked Kathleen if Newty had
a childhood dream, she said, `Yeah, he wanted to be a zookeeper.' How
about that! His dream came true.
