

A Song a Day (1-4) - Whether you've written songs before or not, this course will have you waxing lyrical and/or musical in no time. The focus will be on collaboration within the group and we will be attempting to write a new song every day.
Pop Songs 'R' Us (2-4) - The same basic concept as the above class but with the emphasis on writing three minute, uptempo, cheerful (!) songs with a bit that people can join in on: you know... the chorus! John, meet Paul; Elton, meet Bernie; Garth, meet Satan...
Beginning Bass (1-2) - Play the bass in any key. Yes, any key! We'll learn proper hand placement to prevent injury and a movable system of numerical relationships that will let you play in whatever key you choose. F? Eb? Ab? No problem! If you've ever wanted to unravel the mystery of the bass, this is the class for you.
Unobtrusive Percussion (1-4) - We will explore a variety of rhythmic grooves, using a compact set of percussion tools. With these skills, we will be able to accompany most of the acoustic music found at camp: country, r&b, rock, swing, jigs, reels, waltzes, and some Latin claves will be covered.
Classical Technique for Folkies (2-3) - This class introduces classical guitar technique for beginning to intermediate players of any style. Artificial harmonics, tremolo, and cross-string trills will be demystified for use in your own music. Several classical tunes will be used as vehicles for exploring new techniques.
Beginner's Fingerpicking (1-2) - Learn solid fingerpicking principles that will allow maximum choice later in developing your own style and interests. Develop strength and efficiency in both hands while exploring tone production, very simple picking patterns, some basic chords, relaxation, and avoiding injury.
Flatpicking Lead Guitar (3-4) - We'll study flatpicking techniques like alternating and consecutive picking, interlocking lines, string-bending, vibrato, and cross-picking; we'll do exercises to gain proficiency; and we'll put them to use in tunes, bluesy riffage, and harmony fiddle tune arrangements.
Flatpicking Rhythm and Backup (3-4) - We'll learn many different ways to use the majestic flatpick in accompaniment, from driving bluegrass strokes to delicate arpeggiated folk styles to rockin' honky-tonk backup, and all the areas in between.
Country Harmony (2-4) - This class is for students who are interested in experimenting with southern harmony styles in duet, trio, and quartet formats. Come prepared to sing. Repertoire will include the Carter Family, Louvin Brothers, Stanley Brothers, and others.
Mountain Vocal Styles (2-4) - We will explore southern mountain singing from unaccompanied ballads and sacred songs to bluegrass breakdowns. Students will learn to recognize styles associated with different eras and social purposes as well as learning repertoire and singing a lot in class!
Swinging Vocal Duets (2-4) - This class is for people who want to channel Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, or Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. When they sang romantic duets on screen and recordings, did you want to sing along but couldn't remember the words? This class will help! No music reading required.
Jump, Jive, & Bop (2-4) - A very hep vocal repertoire class, drawing on recordings by Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Nellie Lutcher, Joe Mooney, Ella Johnson, Slim & Slam, and others. Strictly fun; leave your vocal technique at home and let the good times roll!
Camp Instrumentalist
Beginning Flatpicking (2) - Starting with the very basics, we'll learn to play flatpick guitar. We'll unravel the secrets of right-hand techniques, good rhythm playing, bass runs, and do it in the context of a few fiddle tunes and other tunes of interest.
Flatpick Lead (3-4) - This class will pick up where Beginning Flatpicking left off and continue with new tunes that will help us explore rhythmic options (both traditional and modern), use of open strings, double stops, melodic vocabulary, improvising, moving up the neck, and so on.
Beginning Fiddle (1-2) - We will examine the choices a fiddler makes in developing a style. We will work on playing by ear, and try to solidify our timing and bowing. We will try to learn one tune each day, with each tune introducing new techniques.
Southern Fiddling Styles (2-3) - A generation or two ago you could tell where a fiddler was from by his style and repertoire. We'll examine representative tunes from West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky for what gives them their unique character. We'll use a variety of traditional tunings and we'll learn to play some great new tunes.
Camp Instrumentalist
Noteworthy Songs (1-3) - Learn songs to melt your heart, get your feet tapping and your fingers playing along, wonderful, timeless old and new songs with simple to intermediate accompaniment - or give your hands a rest and just come to sing!
Stagecraft - The New Frontier (1-4) - All voices, all instruments welcome. Come and find out how fun and rewarding it can be to share your music with others. We'll learn microphone technique, how to deal with the jitters, and how to build a community of support with your audience.

Jazz Guitar Accompaniment (3-4) - Using standards as a vehicle, we will discuss techniques used by guitarists to accompany singers and soloists: being supportive while implying the time, comping, walking the bass, and filling between phrases. We will pair up and do lots of playing.
Beyond I-IV-V (2-4) - While I-IV-V is the most common sequence of chords, other great progressions exist. Learn how to build progressions from other notes in the scale and then add color by extending those chords. We will also touch on "borrowing" chords, chord substitutions, and harmonic replacement.
Brazilian Guitar (3-4) - This class will look at developing a swinging rhythmic foundation for bossa nova and samba. The class will explore the harmonic approach used by both brazilian and jazz players using some well-known Brazilian songs.
Improvisation (4) - Learn ways to negotiate a set of chord changes using arpeggios, scales, chord tones, and their extensions. We will study some well-known standards employing these techniqes to improvise.
Beginning Mandolin (1-2) - We will concentrate on the basics: right and left hand technique, simple chord forms, and scale patterns. We will work with several simple but interesting tunes in a variety of styles. This is an ideal situation to establish good basic habits; it is also great for guitarists who want to pick up the mandolin.
Old Time and Early Bluegrass Mandolin (2-3) - We will learn a variety of old time tunes and the techniques required to play them. We will also study the kick-offs and solos of early Bluegrass mandolinists Bill Monroe, Everett Lilly, and Peewee Lambert, among others.
C-A-G-E-D but No Longer Confined To First Position (2-3) - This class is an exploration of the five chord shapes on the neck of the guitar and how they fit together, unlocking the mysterious fingerboard! It's a great class for anyone with "Guitar Agoraphobia," the fear of venturing past the fourth fret. Mistakes encouraged!
Beginning Guitar (1) - Someone once said that 50% of the value of any effort lies in the way in which it is begun. This class welcomes the beginner into the world of playing the guitar, with patient emphasis on helping each person to discover the joy of playing while putting up with the nuisance of sore fingers.
Swing Rhythm (3) - What makes swing swing? We'll focus on the subtleties of swing triplet feel through riff tunes and lots of playing in class. And we'll learn a few moveable chords along the way. Students should be comfortable with first position chords.
Hearing Changes (3-4) - They may look complicated, but a lot of swing tunes rely on similar chord progressions. We'll learn some new tunes, and we'll learn to hear these common progressions so that you can fearlessly jump into an uncharted swing jam or learn a new song from a recording - without the sheet music!
Women Blues Singers (1-4) - We'll learn songs from classic blues singers of the 1920s like Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Victoria Spivey, and Ma Rainey, plus country blues songs from Memphis Minnie. Emphasis will be on singing, not picking. All levels welcome.
Blues String Band (1-4) - We'll play songs and tunes from jug bands, black string bands, and hillbilly bands, all with a blues flavor. If you like the music of the Memphis Jug Band, the Mississippi Sheiks, or Lowe Stokes, you'll like this class. All instruments welcome -- guitar, mandolin, fiddle, etc. All levels.
