"Instructors breaking tunes and techniques down into bite-sized pieces in classes, and then really cutting loose in their own genres in concerts and dances gave me the beginnings of access to those culturally unique sounds. It seemed to me that instructors had a good sense of tunes that were teachable and interesting, and showed the bones of the genre. I also was impressed with the things that I found myself doing. Daniel, Pete and Alan would play something that sounded totally unreproduceable, and then would walk us through it elegantly and we'd end up playing it pretty well. It was a surprise and a delight David and Normand did the same with the band labs. These guys have been playing and thinking about this music for a long time, and they are all very good at articulating their stuff, sometimes through language, but mostly through breaking down their playing into detailed, manageable chunks for students."
