177 years ago (1823),

	Maria Edgeworth, Irish novelist, visits the Trossachs, and thinks
     of Sir Walter Scott and her feelings on visiting the scenery he has
     made famous in "The Lady of the Lake." (LS)

132 years ago (1868),

	Algernon Charles Swinburne offers a reward for the return of the
     manuscript of _Bothwell_, accidentally left in a hansom cab.

95 years ago (1905),

	Playwright (_The Little Foxes_) and memoirist (_Pentimento_) Lillian
     Hellman is born in New Orleans. Her advice to fledgling writers:
     "Nothing you write, if you hope to be any good, will ever come out as
     you first hoped."

41 years ago (1959),

	Sylvia Plath , longing desperately to conceive, notes in her
     journal: "Suddenly everything is ominous, ironic, deadly. If I could
     not have children...I would be dead.... My writing a hollow and failing
     substitute for real life, real feeling."
