LONDON, March 10 (AFP) - The British counter-espionage service MI5, which
began recruiting agents with newspaper ads last year, has taken another
first step by listing its number in the phone book, the Home Office said
Tuesday.
For the first time in 89 years, MI5 will be reachable with a simple
direct call: 0171-930-9000 in Britain, 44-1-930-9000 from anywhere else in
the world.
The agency said it created the phone line -- open every day 7H30 to 23H00
-- for the convenience of terrorists and other miscreants wanting to rat on
their colleagues.
It is not an information line for members of the public wanting to know
about MI5, said Interior Secretary Jack Straw.
And hoaxsters beware: the calling number is automatically recorded.
A year ago MI5 raised eyebrows with unprecedented advertisements in the
national press for people interested in a career as a spy.
