Well, it didn't really work for me, but perhaps that was because I recognized  
it as a minor variation on an ancient pseudo-sleight-of-hand card trick...
A really easy version of the trick goes something like this:

+ Prepare the deck by putting the 7 of hearts and the 9 of diamonds on the  
top of the deck and the 7 of diamonds and the 9 of hearts on the bottom.
+ Shuffle a few times without disturbing the top 2 or bottom 2 cards (easy).
+ Take the top two cards and hold them up so the victims can see them but you  
can't, saying something like "Okay we'll take these two cards ... memorize  
them please!"
+ Make a production of "burying" the two cards at different spots in the deck.
+ Shuffle some more (now only protecting the bottom two cards).
+ Make up some malarkey about having made the two selected cards particularly  
heavy and that now you're going to perform a modern variation of what Native  
Americans called "winnowing" -- and then while blowing across the cards, bang  
them on the table as if you were forcing the heavier cards to the bottom.  Or  
make up some other ridiculous but graphic explanation for why two of the cards  
might shift their position.  You're also giving the victims a little more  
time to forget which cards they saw (just for insurance, not really  
necessary).
+ Finally, take the bottom two cards and throw them face up on the table  
saying "And here they are! ... Are those your cards?"  Although they're not, I  
have never had anyone say so; instead, people are convinced that somehow I  
read their minds to figure out which cards they had and then I snuck their  
cards onto the bottom of the deck.
I've tried it with many different pairs of cards and they all worked.  Of  
course I'm careful to stay away from cards where the suits are important and  
might stick in someone's mind (Ace of Spades, King of Hearts, Queen of Spades,  
Jack of Diamonds, etc.)
