Realizing that they are quickly losing readers to Internet junkies, daily
newspapers around the country have begun to reject advertising that points
readers to "the net" for job listings and real estate information. Last
week, the San Jose Mercury News accepted and then abruptly rejected a
$60,000 ad for a "virtual job fair." According to advertisers, by rejecting
ads newspapers are admitting that the Internet is a threat to their
long-standing dominance in advertising. The LA Times last month rejected
a series of ads from West Venture Homes which instructed people to "go
online to tour Southern California's most charming new homes." Laura Morgan,
a spokeswoman from the Times said the ad posed a problem for the paper
because it directed readers to the Internet as a main source of information.
"What was unique about the ad was that it only pointed to the Internet,"
she said. "We would like our clients to use the Times for more than a
directory." (SF Chronicle)
