Subject: an intimate interaction with insecta?

On the chance of being really embarassed, I'm curious to see if
anyone else has ever tried this. I was in Costa Rica several years
ago as part of a tropical ecology course. One of the readings
emphatically suggested that you should, ah, supply the necessary
substrate to watch dung beetles in action. I found myself in the
perfect circumstance at one point (too far from the field station
when nature called), and figured, what the hell.

It was really quite fascinating; various sorts of critters all showed
up within seconds, and began to stake out territories and roll bits
of it away. It was pleasing, in an odd way, to interact with nature
on such an intimate level. . .
