Subject: There's a future in the past

[ I was just thinking about how Bill Clinton had backed down on am
appointment to a top civil rights position because the appointee
(unbeknownst to him) actually cared about civil rights -- and had even
thought and written about it. And then I realized that ol' Bill had
backed down on gays in the military and on an energy tax and on the
Haitian refugees and was giving big businesses like Kaiser aluminum
special priveleges and (gee, did I miss anything?) ... then this
reassuring comparison came in the mail. -psl]

File this under "there's a future in the past:"

Ex-president Theodore Roosevelt said of his successor, William Howard
Taft, "I could carve a better man out of a bananna." Seems to have
a certain relevance to the current occupant of the White House. . .
