Travel Logistics

Driving Directions

Via Ferry from Seattle:

- Take the Fauntleroy/West Seattle ferry from Fauntleroy/West Seattle to Southworth (this ferry may stop at Vashon island before landing at Southworth) and turn left onto Sedgwick Road when you get off the ferry. (Left turn after ferry booth and parking lot, store on right side) continue on Sedgwick as it crosses over highway 16. Now follow directions from #6 below.

- Follow Sedgwick Rd to the light (Albertsons store is on your left) at Sidney Road.

- Cross Sidney and follow the main road as it bends south and becomes Glenwood Road and then heads West and becomes Lake Flora Road (i.e. keep going straight ahead).

- There are signs saying Pilgrim Firs Camp at this point.

- Once the road has turned into Lake Flora Road, go about 1.4 miles and watch for the Pilgrim Firs double driveway & sign on your left (there is also a sign on the right and a street light)

OR avoid the ferry and DRIVE AROUND THE SOUND

Via Seattle/ Bremertion Ferry

If you take the Seattle-Bremerton Ferry (a nice hour long ferry trip across Puget Sound) From the Bremerton ferry dock-- Follow signs to Highway 16 East (towards Tacoma). Get on Rte. 16 and exit onto Sedgwick Rd and head west. This becomes Lake Flora Road, etc.

From I-5 (either direction):

- In Tacoma, take Highway 16 West towards Bremerton

- Once on Highway 16 take the Sedgwick Road exit. (accessed from both directions off Highway 16) At the top of the off ramp - turn right if coming from Bremerton, -turn left over freeway if coming from Tacoma.

The scenic back route to Pilgrim Firs for those coming from south of Olympia:

Note: This way is great for avoiding the Tacoma Narrows bridge and traffic in Tacoma, but if you haven't traveled this way before it is best not to try it in the dark. The road is pleasant as it winds around the various inlets of the sound and through the small towns.

- From I-5, heading north, in Olympia take highway 101 North to Port Townsend/Shelton.
- Take the exit to Highway #3 north to Shelton/Bremerton.

-  Stay right at the fork toward Bremerton.

- In Shelton watch for the signs of Hwy #3 as it jags through town.

- Continue north on highway #3 past Allyn on to Belfair

- After passing through Belfair, approx. 2 miles north turn right onto SW Lake Flora Rd.

- At the traffic circle in the road, go 2/3 of the way around in order to continue on Lake Flora Rd past the golf course.

- Look for the street lamp on the left side of the road across from the driveway to Pilgrim Firs and a large wood sign on the right at the entrance to Pilgrim Firs.

- Turn right into Pilgrim Firs. (there is a street light opposite the driveway into camp)

Rides/Carpooling

Our site coordinator can help arrange rides and carpooling from the airport. Please let us know if you would like to carpool or if you live near the airport and could give another attendee a ride. If you're planning on renting a car at the airport, you might consider defraying the expense by taking a few banjo-picking riders. . .

Travel Timing

Thursday: Attendees coming for the Extra Day can arrive anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. If you're driving from Seattle you should leave about two hours for the drive; leaving between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. ought to get you to camp before dinner. If you're flying, you should plan on arriving at SeaTac airport by 2:30 p.m. at the latest.

Friday: Registration starts at 12:00 noon on Friday (not before!), student orientation will be about 2:00 p.m., and the first class is scheduled at 3:00, so you should try to arrive at Camp between noon and 1:30 p.m. to register, get set up in your dorm space, and be ready for the start of events. If you're flying, plan on arriving at SeaTac airport by 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the latest.

Sunday: Lunch ends at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday and camp ends officially at 2:00. If you're flying and don't want to miss lunch, (and need to allow 90 minutes for getting through SeaTac check-in and security), make sure to schedule your return flight for no earlier than 4:15 p.m. People returning on Sunday who need to take ferries should be aware that Sunday crossings can be crowded and waiting times for automobiles can often be an hour or more.
